Apple moved their computer architecture away from the [[Macintosh_(M68000)|Motorola M68000]] to the PowerPC platform. This created a divide for software and while some M68k emulation was available on the newer system, older hardware users would be forced to upgrade. Apple would do this three more times after this with the changes to Intel, 64 bit, and ARM.
